PHILIPPIANS 1:12-19

Wednesday Evening:  January 30, 2008

Text:  Philippians 1:12-19  But I would ye should understand, brethren, that the things which happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel;  13  So that my bonds in Christ are manifest in all the palace, and in all other places;  14  And many of the brethren in the Lord, waxing confident by my bonds, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.  15  Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife; and some also of good will:  16  The one preach Christ of contention, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my bonds:  17  But the other of love, knowing that I am set for the defense of the gospel.  18  What then? notwithstanding, every way, whether in pretence, or in truth, Christ is preached; and I therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice.  19  For I know that this shall turn to my salvation through your prayer, and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,

BRETHREN, UNDERSTAND THIS

Philippians 1:12  But I would ye should understand [present active], brethren, that the things which happened unto [concerning] me have fallen [perfect active indicative, have happened] out rather unto the furtherance [profit, advancement] of the gospel (Paul’s gospel, the Word of God, v. 14);

PAUL’S GOSPEL

2 Thessalonians 2:14  Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining (by a worthy walk) of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

THE CALLING

1 Thessalonians 2:12  That ye would walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory.

SALVATION FIRST THEN CALLING

2 Timothy 1:9  Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace

IN THE PALACE

Philippians 1:13  So that my bonds in (the cause of) Christ are manifest [aorist, have come] [before] in all the palace [judgment hall], and in all other [to all the other ones] places;

PREACHING IS TO CROWDS

1 Corinthians 9:16  For though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel! (Paul’s Gospel]

SERVANT TO ALL - LIFESTYLE

1 Corinthians 9:19  For though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more.

TO SPEAK THE WORD OF GOD

Philippians 1:14  And many [greater number] of the brethren in the Lord, waxing confident by my bonds, are much more bold [present active infinitive] to speak [present active infinitive] the word [of God. 24th Nestles] without fear.

THE WORD OF GOD

Luke 8:10-11  And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand.  11  Now the parable is this: The seed (sown) is the word of God.

BEGOTTEN AGAIN BY THE SEED

1 Peter 1:23  Being born again [anaggennaw, begotten again], not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.

BORN FROM ABOVE

John 3:3  …  Except a man be born [gennaw] again [anwqen, from above, see v. 31], he cannot see the kingdom of God.

UNTO A LIVING HOPE

1 Peter 1:3  Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again [anaggennaw] unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

LIVING HOPE OF GLORY

Colossians 1:27  To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery (the word of God) among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:

SOME OF ENVY, SOME OF GOOD WILL

Philippians 1:15  Some indeed preach [present active] Christ even of envy (fret of Paul’s position) and strife (continuously, not honestly v. 16) ; and some also of good will [desire, delight, satisfaction]:

PREACHED OF CONTENTION, OTHER OF LOVE

Philippians 1:16-17  The one preach Christ of contention (to create factions), not sincerely, supposing [present middle participle, ones thinking] to add [supper add] affliction [tribulation] to my bonds:  17  But the other of love, knowing that I am set [present middle indicative, stretched out] for the defense of the gospel.

PERVERT THE GOSPEL OF CHRIST

Galatians 1:6-7  I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:  7  Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.

TO GLORY IN YOUR FLESH

Galatians 6:12-13  As many as desire to make a fair shew in the flesh, they constrain you to be circumcised; only lest they should suffer persecution for the cross of Christ.  13  For neither they themselves who are circumcised keep the law; but desire to have you circumcised, that they may glory in your flesh.

JUSTIFIED BY THE LAW?

Galatians 2:16  Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.

JUSTIFIED BY LIVING BY FAITH

Galatians 3:11  But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.

MESSAGE OF CHRIST DID NOT HELP SOME

Galatians 5:4  Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace.

WHAT THEN?

Philippians 1:18  What then? notwithstanding, every way, whether in pretence, or in truth, Christ is preached; and I therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice.

POWERFUL REGARDLESS WHO PREACHES

Hebrews 4:12  For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

SPIRIT OF CHRIST

Philippians 1:19  For I know that this shall turn to my salvation [deliverance, health, safety] through your prayer, and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,

SPIRIT OF JESUS CHRIST

Galatians 4:6  And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

THY WILL BE DONE

Mark 14:36  And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.
