ROMANS 9:1-5

Sunday Morning:  July 23, 2006

Text:  Romans 9:1-5  I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost,  2  That I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart.  3  For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh:  4  Who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises;  5  Whose are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen.

PAUL’S BURDEN FOR ISRAEL

Romans 9:1-2  I say the truth in Christ, I lie [present middle] not, my conscience also bearing me witness [present active] in the Holy Ghost,  2  That I have [endure] great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart.

TO ISRAEL FIRST

Acts 17:1-2  . . . they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews:  2  And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures,

ACCURSED, NO LOSS OF SALVATION

Romans 9:3  For I could wish that myself were accursed [separated (as in being cut off)] from Christ (a place in Christ coming kingdom) for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh:

PAUL WAS . . .

Romans 11:1  I say then, Hath God cast away his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.

WHO ARE ISRAELITES

Romans 9:4  Who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises;

ISRAEL HAS POWER WITH GOD

Genesis 32:28  And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel [he will rule as God, also God prevails]: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.

A SPECIAL CHOSEN PEOPLE

Deuteronomy 7:6  For thou art an holy people unto the LORD thy God: the LORD thy God hath chosen thee to be a special people unto himself, above all people that are upon the face of the earth.

THE ADOPTION

Romans 9:4  Who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption [to place as a son], and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises;

THE BIRTHRIGHT

Genesis 27:36  And he (Esau, who despised his birthright) said, Is not he rightly named Jacob? . . . he took away my birthright (double inheritance); and, behold, now he hath taken away my blessing. (to rule over his brethren)

TIME AND PLACE

Romans 8:23  . . . waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.

SPIRIT AND NOT POSITION OF A SON

Romans 8:15  For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

THE GLORY

Romans 9:4  Who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises;

THE PRESENCE OF GOD

Exodus 40:34-35  Then a cloud covered the tent of the congregation, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. 35 And Moses was not able to enter into the tent of the congregation, because the cloud abode thereon, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.

THE COVENANTS

Romans 9:4  Who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises;

TWO COVENANTS

Galatians 4:24-30  Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar.

EARTHLY COVENANT

25  For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children.

HEAVENLY COVENANT

26  But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.  27  For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: for the desolate hath many more children than she which hath an husband.  28  Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise.  29  But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now.

SEPARATE INHERITANCES

30  Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.

THE LAW

Romans 9:4  Who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises;

THE CEREMONIAL AND MORAL LAW

John 1:17  For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

THE SERVICE OF GOD

Romans 9:4  Who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises;

PRIEST DID THE SERVICE OF GOD

Hebrews 9:6-7  Now when these things were thus ordained, the priests went always into the first tabernacle, accomplishing the service of God.  7  But into the second went the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people:

THE PROMISES

Romans 9:4  Who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises;

PROMISES INHERITED

Hebrews 6:12  That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

EARTHLY AND HEAVENLY PROMISE

Genesis 22:17  That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven (heavenly promise), and as the sand which is upon the sea shore (earthly promise); and thy seed shall possess [inherit] the gate of his enemies;

CHRIST CAME THROUGH THE FATHERS

Romans 9:5  Whose are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for [unto] ever [ages]. Amen.

THE FATHERS

Deuteronomy 29:13  That he may establish thee to day for a people unto himself, and that he may be unto thee a God, . . ., and as he hath sworn unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

GOD SPAKE TO THE FATHERS

Hebrews 1:1  God, . . . spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,

OF THE CHRIST

Matthew 1:22-23  Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,  23  Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
