ROMANS 8:3
Sunday
Morning: February 26, 2006
Text:
Romans 8:3-8 For what the law could not do, in that it was
weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful
flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
4 That the righteousness of the law
might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the
Spirit. 5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the
things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the
Spirit. 6 For to be carnally minded is death;
but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7
Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not
subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. 8 So
then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
THE
LAW WAS WEAK
Romans 8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak [imperfect active indicative] through [dia, because of] the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and
for sin, condemned [judged against,
sentenced] [the] sin (lawlessness)
in the flesh:
MAKE
NO PROVISION FOR THE FLESH
Romans 13:14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil
the lusts thereof.
OUR
OWN LUST
James 1:14-16 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away [present passive] of his own lust, and enticed [present passive].
15 Then when lust hath conceived [to
clasp, to seize], it bringeth
[present active] forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth [present active] death
[qanatov]. 16 Do not err,
my beloved brethren.
LUST
OF OUR FLESH
Ephesians 2:3 Among whom also we all had our conversation (lifestyle) in
times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind;
and were by nature the children [teknon, mature children] of wrath
[anger], even as others.
LUST
OF THE FLESH AND EYES
1 John 2:16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of
the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
THE CONFLICT
Galatians 5:16-17 This I say then, Walk [present active] in the
Spirit (Abba spirit, submission),
and ye shall not [mh, may not] fulfil the lust of the flesh. 17 For
the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary
[present middle] the one to the other: so that ye cannot [mh, may not] do [present active subjunctive]
the things that ye would [present active subjunctive].
WORKS
OF THE FLESH
Galatians 5:19-21 Now the works
of the flesh are manifest, which
are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20
Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions,
heresies, 21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings,
and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you
in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of
God.
FRUIT
OF THE ABBA SPIRIT
Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit
of the (Abba) Spirit is love,
joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness,
temperance: against such there is no law.
ABBA SPIRIT
Mark 14:36 And
he said, Abba, Father, all things are
possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.
GOD
SENT HIS OWN SON
Romans 8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it was
weak through the flesh, God sending his
own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned [judged against, sentenced] [the] sin (lawlessness) in the flesh:
GOD’S
SON BECAME FLESH
Hebrews 2:14 Forasmuch then as the children [paidion, little children] are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy (limit) him
that had the power of death, that is, the
devil;
A
MERCIFUL HIGH PRIEST
Hebrews 2:17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be
made like unto his brethren, that
he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining
to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.
WE
MIGHT HAVE A LIFE
1 John 4:9-10 In this was manifested the love of God toward
us, because that God sent his only begotten Son
into the world, that we might live [aorist active subjunctive] through him. 10
Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
GOD’S
SON OUR HIGH PRIEST
Hebrews 5:5 So also Christ glorified not himself to be made
an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten
thee.
JESUS
RAISED AGAIN
Acts 13:33 God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children,
in that he hath raised up Jesus again;
as it is also written in the second psalm, Thou
art my Son, this day have I begotten thee.
TO
BE A PRIEST
Hebrews 5:6 As he saith also in another place,
Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.
THAT
FAITH WOULD NOT BE VAIN
1 Corinthians
15:14 And if Christ be not risen, then
is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.
TO
HAVE GRACE
Romans 5:2 By whom also we have access by faith into this
grace wherein we stand, and rejoice
in hope of the glory of God.
GRACE,
THE POWER OF CHRIST
2 Corinthians
12:9-10 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength
is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my
infirmities, that the power of Christ
may rest upon me. 10 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in
reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake:
for when I am weak, then am I strong.
BE
STRONG
Ephesians 6:10 Finally, my brethren, be strong [present
passive imperative] in the Lord, and in the power of his might.
BE
STRONG IN GRACE
2 Timothy 2:1 Thou therefore, my son, be strong [present
passive imperative] in the grace
that is in Christ Jesus.
WE
HAVE A GREAT HIGH PRIEST
Hebrews 4:14-16 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast [present active subjunctive]
our profession. 15 For we have not an high priest which cannot
be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted
like as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us
therefore come [present middle
subjunctive] boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain
mercy, and find grace to help in
time of need.
THE
FLESH IS WEAK
Matthew 26:41 Watch
[present active imperative] and pray
[present active imperative], that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit
indeed is willing [adjective,],
but the flesh is weak [adjective].
