ROMANS 8:1-2
Sunday
Morning: February 12, 2006
Text: Romans 8:1-5 There
is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who
walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
2 For the law of the Spirit of
life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. 3 For
what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending
his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the
flesh: 4
That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not
after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
5 For they that are after the
flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the
things of the Spirit.
WALK
AFTER THE SPIRIT
Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation
to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk
[present active participle, walking] not after the flesh, but after [kata, according to] the Spirit. (in verse 2)
LAST
PHRASE IN VERSE 4
Romans 8:4 That the righteousness of the law might be
fulfilled in us, who walk [present
active participle, walking] not after the flesh, but after [kata, according to] the Spirit.
SPIRIT
IN ROMANS 8
Romans 8:15 For ye have not received the spirit of
bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption
[(compound word) uiov, son + tiqhmi, place (to be
placed as a son), whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
THE
SPIRIT IN THE SON OF GOD
Galatians 4:5-6 To redeem
them that were under the law, that we
might (or might not) receive [aorist active subjunctive]
the adoption of sons [(one compound
word) uiov, son + tiqhmi, place (to be
placed as a son). 6 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth
the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying
[present active participle], Abba,
Father.
ABBA,
FATHER MEANS:
Mark 14:36 And he said,
Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup
from me: nevertheless not what I will,
but what thou wilt.
HE
PLEASED THE FATHER
John 8:29 And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath
not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.
I
SEEK NOT MINE OWN WILL
John 5:30 I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear,
I judge: and my judgment is just; because I
seek not mine own will, but the will
of the Father which hath sent me.
LIVING
LIKE A SON
John 4:34 Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.
WHO
WILL ENTER INTO THE KINGDOM?
Matthew 7:21 Not
every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will
of my Father which is in heaven.
SPIRIT
OF LIFE IN CHRIST
Romans 8:2 For
[conjunction connecting verse 1 to verse 2] the law (not moral or ceremonial law but rules) of the Spirit of
life in Christ Jesus hath made me free
from the law of [the] sin and [the] death.
SEEK
FIRST THE KINGDOM
Matthew 6:33 But seek
[present active imperative] ye first
the
SEEK
THINGS WHICH ARE ABOVE
Colossians 3:1-2 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek [present active] those
things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. 2 Set [present active] your
affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
PURSUE
FAITH
1 Timothy 6:11-12 But thou, O man of God, flee [present active imperative] these things; and follow [present active imperative]
after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. 12 Fight [present middle] the good
fight of faith, lay hold [aorist middle imperative]
on eternal [age-lasting] life, whereunto thou art also called, . . .
LIVING
SACRIFICE
Romans 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the
mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living [present active] sacrifice, holy, acceptable [well
pleasing] unto God, which is your reasonable service.
TRANSFORM
YOUR MIND
Romans 12:2 And be not conformed [present passive] to this world [age]: but
be ye transformed [present passive]
by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove [present active] what is
that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
BE
ANXIOUS FOR NOTHING
Philippians 4:6-7 Be careful [present active] for nothing [not even one thing];
but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your
requests be made known [present passive] unto
God. 7
And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your
hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
THINK
ON THESE THINGS
Philippians 4:8-9 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are
true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just,
whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely,
whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and
if there be any praise, think
[present active imperative] on these things. 9
Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and
seen in me, do [present active,
practice]: and the God of peace shall be with you.
PUT
ON THE WHOLE ARMOR OF GOD
Ephesians 6:10-13 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in
the power of his might (grace).
11 Put on the whole armour of
God, that ye may be able to stand
against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood,
but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness
of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. 13
Wherefore take unto you the whole
armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand
in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
HATH
MADE ME FREE
Romans 8:2 For
[conjunction connecting verse 1 to verse 2] the law (not moral or ceremonial law but rules) of the Spirit of
life in Christ Jesus hath made me free
from the law of [the] sin and [the] death.
THE
TRUTH SHALL MAKE YOU FREE
John 8:31-32 . . . If ye continue in my word, then
are ye my disciples indeed; 32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
OBEYED
THE TRUTH
Romans 6:17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants
of [the] sin (lawlessness),
but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered
you.
MADE
FREE FROM THE SIN
Romans 6:22 But now being made free from [the]
sin (lawlessness), and become
servants to God, ye have your fruit unto [leading
to] holiness, and the end [telos, (not the beginning)] everlasting [aiwniov, age-lasting] life.
WAGES
OF LAWLESSNESS IS DEATH
Romans 6:23 For the wages
(at the end of the age) of [the] sin (lawlessness) is death [qanatov, (loss of age-lasting life); but the gift [gift by grace] of God is
eternal [age-lasting] life (in the kingdom age)
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
THE
ONE HEARING AND BELIEVING
John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth [present active participle]
my word, and believeth [present active participle] on him (the Father)
that sent me, hath [present
active of ecw, regardeth, esteemeth] everlasting [age-lasting] life (in the kingdom age), and
shall not [ou, emphatic not] come [present middle] into condemnation [krisiv, judgment]; but is passed [perfect active] from [the] death (loss of honor in the kingdom) unto [the] life (of honor in the coming kingdom
age).
WRITTEN THAT YE MIGHT BELIEVE, PRESENT ACTIVE
John 20:31 But these are written, that ye might
believe [present active
subjunctive] that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing
[present active] ye might have [present active of ecw, to esteem, or
regard] [aiwniov, age-lasting] life through his name (the Word of God, Rev 19:13).
HAVE
THE SPIRIT OF FAITH
2 Corinthians
4:13-14 We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore have I spoken; we also [kai, indeed] believe [present active], and therefore speak [present active];
14 Knowing that he which raised
up the Lord Jesus (gave him glory, 1 John 1:23) shall raise up us also
by Jesus, and shall present us
with you.
THE
HOPE OF GLORY
1 Peter 1:21 Who by him do believe [present active] in God, that raised him up from the
dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God.
