ROMANS 7:4-5

Sunday Morning:  January 1, 2006

Text:  Romans 7:4-5  Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.  5  For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.

FRUIT BEARING

Romans 7:4  Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead (not stimulated by) to the law (ordnances) by the body (nailed to the cross) of Christ; that ye should be married [ginomia, to become, to be turned, 1096, not marriage 1060] to another, even to him who is raised from the dead (Christ, our high priest), that we should [may] bring forth [subjunctive] fruit unto God.

ABIDE IN ME AND I IN YOU

John 15:4  Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear [present active] fruit of itself, except it abide [present active subjunctive] in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide [present active subjunctive] in me.

YOU CAN DO NOTHING

John 15:5  I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth [present active] in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth [present active] much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

DISCIPLES BEAR FRUIT

John 15:8  Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear [present active subjunctive] much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.

FRUIT OF THE BRANCH

Judges 9:13  And the vine said unto them, Should I leave my wine, which cheereth God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?

CREATED FOR HIS PLEASURE

Revelation 4:11  Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.

WE NEED TO PLEASE HIM

2 Timothy 2:4  No man that warreth [present middle] entangleth [present passive] himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.

STRONG IN GRACE

2 Timothy 2:1  Thou therefore, my son, be strong [present passive] in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

LIVING BY FAITH PLEASES HIM

Hebrews 11:6  But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

ABOUND IN PLEASING GOD

1 Thessalonians 4:1  Furthermore then we beseech you, brethren, and exhort you by the Lord Jesus, that as ye have received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, so ye would abound more and more.

WELL PLEASING UNTO GOD

Romans 12:1-2  I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable [well pleasing] unto God, which is your reasonable service.  2  And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable [well pleasing], and perfect, will of God.

WELL DONE

Matthew 25:23  His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.

BECAUSE WE ARE IN THE FLESH

Romans 7:5  For when we were [imperfect active, past continuous action] in the flesh, the motions [passions] of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto [the] death [qanatov].

PASSIONS TO SIN BECAUSE OF LUST

James 4:1  From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?

THE LAW SAYS “NO”

James 4:2  Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.

DENIED BECAUSE OF LUST

James 4:3  Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.

NOT FAITHFUL TO GOD

James 4:4  Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

ADULTERY FORBIDDEN

Exodus 20:14  Thou shalt not commit adultery.

FRUIT OF PASSION, DEATH

Leviticus 20:10  And the man that committeth adultery with another man's wife, even he that committeth adultery with his neighbour's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.

SOWING TO THE FLESH

Galatians 6:7-8  Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.  8  For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the (abba) Spirit (of God’s Son) shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.

WALK IN THE SPIRIT

Galatians 5:16  This I say then, Walk [present active] in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

ABBA SPIRIT OF GOD’S SON

Galatians 4:5-6  To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.  6  And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

JESUS PLEASED THE FATHER

John 8:29  And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.

THE SPIRIT OF GOD’S SON

Mark 14:36  And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.

LUST AND PASSIONS OF THE FLESH

Galatians 5:18-19  But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.  19  Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,

FRUIT OF LUST OF THE FLESH

Galatians 5:21  Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

WARNING TO BRETHREN

James 1:14-16  But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.  15  Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth [present active] death [qanatov].  16  Do not err, my beloved brethren.

SAVE A SOUL FROM DEATH

James 5:19-20  Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him;  20  Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner (brother) from the error of his way shall save a soul (of a brother) from [ek, out from] death [qanatov], and shall hide a multitude of sins.
