ROMANS 6:5-7

Sunday Morning:  November 6, 2005

Text:  Romans 6:1-7  What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?  2  God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?  3  Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?  4  Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.  5  For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:  6  Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.  7  For he that is dead is freed from sin.

WHAT PAUL IS SAYING

Romans 6:11-12  Likewise reckon [present middle, count, conclude, reason] ye also yourselves to be dead [nekrov, no life (not aware)] indeed unto [the] sin, but alive [present active] unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. 12 Let not [the] sin therefore reign [present active]in your mortal body, that ye should obey [present active] it (lawlessness) in the lusts thereof.

CAN WE CONTINUE IN LAWLESSNESS?

Romans 6:1  What shall we say then? Shall we continue in [the[ sin (lawlessness, 1 John 3:4), that grace (power of Christ) may abound?

DOING THE WILL OF THE FLESH AND MIND

Ephesians 2:3  Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling [present active] the desires [will] of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath [anger], even as others.

GOD FORBID

Romans 6:2  God forbid. How shall we, that are dead [aorist active, who died (reckoned to be dead)] to [the] sin, live any longer therein?

DIED BY RECKONING

Romans 6:11  Likewise reckon [present middle, count, conclude, reason] ye also yourselves to be dead [nekrov, no life (not aware)] indeed unto [the] sin, but alive [present active] unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

HOW DO WE DIE TO THE SIN?

Romans 6:3  Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized [aorist passive, dipped] into Jesus Christ were baptized [aorist passive, dipped] into his [the] death [qanatov]? [lit. the death of himself]

PUT ON CHRIST

Galatians 3:27  For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

THE MIND OF CHRIST

Philippians 2:5  Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

OBEDIENT UNTO DEATH

Philippians 2:8  And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

THE DEATH OF HIMSELF

Mark 14:36  And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.

NOT HIS OWN WILL

John 6:38  For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.

TO DO HIS WILL

Hebrews 13:20-21  Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant,  21  Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is wellpleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

FROM THE HEART

Ephesians 6:6  Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart;

BAPTISM, “LIKE AS”

Romans 6:4  Therefore we are buried (by baptism, having died, to self) with him by baptism  into [the] death (“of himself” from v. 3): that like as Christ was raised up from the dead [nekrov not qanatov] by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk [aorist active subjunctive] in newness of life.

BAPTISM, SYMBOLIC LANGUAGE

Colossians 2:12  Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation [effectual working] of God, who hath raised him from the dead [nekrov, physical death].

TO FULFIL ALL RIGHTEOUSNESS

Matthew 3:14-17  But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?  15  And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.  16  And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:  17  And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

DISCIPLE AND TEACH

Matthew 28:19-20  Go ye [aorist passive participle, going] therefore, and teach [maqhteuw, aorist active, disciple] all nations, baptizing [present active] them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:  20  Teaching [present active] them to observe [guard, present active] all things [plural] whatsoever [as many as, plural] I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

QUALIFICATION FOR DISCIPLESHIP

Luke 14:26-27  If any man come [present middle, for myself] to me, and hate [present active, (relative term)] not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life [soul] also, he cannot be my disciple.  27  And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot [ou, emphatic] be [present passive] my disciple [maqhthv].

DISCIPLE’S ATTITUDE

Luke 14:33  So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh [present middle, bid farewell] not [ou, emphatic] all [every thing] that he hath, he cannot [ou, emphatic] be my disciple [maqhthv].

SALVATION FIRST

Acts 16:30-31  And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?  31  And they said, Believe [aorist active imperative] on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

PAUL TAUGHT HIM

Acts 16:32-33  And they spake unto him the word of the Lord [God, 24^th Nestles, the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven], and to all that were in his house (no longer in prison).  33  And he took [paralambanw, aorist, associate with oneself (in any familiar or intimate act or relation, Strong’s); figuratively to learn)] them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes (he ministered to the Lord, Matthew 25:40, “done it unto me”); and was baptized, he and all his, straightway.

LIKE THE DEATH OF HIMSELF

Romans 6:5  For if (conditional) we have been [we have become] planted together [sun, with, fuw, grow, adjective] (figurative, closely united) in the likeness of his [the] death  [lit. the death of himself], we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:

CONFORMABLE TO HIS DEATH

Philippians 3:10  That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his [the] death [lit. the death of himself]

ATTAIN THE OUT RESURRECTION

Philippians 3:11  If by any means I might attain unto the [out] resurrection of the dead [plural (those who have perished)].

THE OUT RESURRECTION

Philippians 3:14  I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
