ROMANS 6:3-4

Sunday Morning:  October 30, 2005

Text:  Romans 6:1-4  What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?  2  God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?  3  Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?  4  Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

VICTORY OVER THE SIN

Romans 6:2  God forbid. How shall we, that are dead [aorist active indicative, have died] to [the] sin, live any longer therein?

PRACTICES, THE SIN, LAWLESSNESS

1 John 3:4  Whosoever committeth [present active, practices] [the] sin transgresseth [present active] also the law [lawlessness]: for [the] sin is the transgression of the law [lawlessness].

SINNING WILFULLY, NOT FORGIVEN

Hebrews 10:26  For if we sin [present active participle] wilfully after that we have received the knowledge [epignwsiv, deeper knowledge] of the truth, there remaineth [present passive] no more sacrifice for sins,

LAWLESSNESS WILL BRING SHAME

Matthew 7:23  And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work [present middle, working for yourself] iniquity [lawlessness].

RECKON DEATH

Romans 6:11  Likewise reckon [present middle imperative, reason, conclude, think] ye also yourselves to be dead [nekrov, a corps] indeed unto [the] sin, but (reckon also to be) alive [present active participle] unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

BAPTIZED INTO HIS DEATH

Romans 6:3  Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his [the] death [qanatov, thanatos] (the death of the soul or life)?

HAVE PUT ON CHRIST

Galatians 3:27  For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

CHRIST IN YOU, THE HOPE

Colossians 1:27  To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of [the] glory:

GOD GAVE HIM GLORY

1 Peter 1:21  Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God.

MIND OF CHRIST

Philippians 2:5  Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

OBEDIENT UNTO DEATH

Philippians 2:7-8  But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:  8  And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death [qanatov, thanatos], even [also] the death of the cross.

DEATHS

Hebrews 2:9  But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of [the] death [qanatov, thanatos], crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death [qanatov, thanatos] for every man (on the cross).

OBEDIENT

Mark 14:36  And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.

FAITH IN OUR HIGH PRIEST

Galatians 2:20  I am crucified [perfect passive, crucified and still crucified] with Christ: nevertheless I live [present active, living]; yet not I, but Christ liveth [present active] in me: and the life which I now live [present active, living] in the flesh I live [present active, living] by the faith of [or from] the Son of God (high priest), who loved me, and gave himself for me.

LIVING SACRIFICE

Romans 12:1-2  I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living [present active] sacrifice, holy [adjective], acceptable [adjective, well pleasing] unto God, which is your reasonable service.  2  And be not conformed [present imperative] to this world: but be ye transformed [present imperative] by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove [present active] what is that good, and acceptable [well pleasing], and perfect [mature], will of God.

DAILY CRUCIFIXION

Luke 9:23-26  And he said to them all, If any man will [present active, desire] come [present middle] after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow [present active imperative] me.  24  For whosoever will save his life [yuch, soul] shall lose [apollumi, perish, crucify] it: but whosoever will lose [apollumi, perish, crucify] his life [yuch, soul] for my sake, the same shall save it.  25  For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose [apollumi, perish, crucify] himself, or be cast away [suffer loss]?

CAST AWAY IN SHAME

26  For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father's, and of the holy angels.

PROOF OF DISCIPLESHIP

Luke 14:27  And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.

LAY ASIDE LAWLESSNESS

Hebrews 12:1-3  Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside [aorist middle] every weight, and the sin (of lawlessness) which doth so easily beset us, and let (may) us run [present active subjunctive] with patience the race that is set before us,  2  Looking [present active] unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before [present middle] him endured the cross (contradiction of sinners, v.3), despising the shame (of being cast away), and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.  3  For consider him that endured [perfect active, continues to endur] such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint [present passive, fainting] in your minds [yuch, soul].

THE PREACHING OF THE CROSS

1 Corinthians 1:17-18  For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.  18  For the preaching [logov, spoken word] of the cross is to them that perish [apollumi, present middle, perishing for themselves] foolishness; but unto us which are saved [present passive participle, being saved] it is (the cross is) the power of God.

ENEMIES OF THE CROSS

Philippians 3:18-19  (For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ:  19  Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.)

GLORY IN THE CROSS OF CHRIST

Galatians 6:14  But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom (our high priest) the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.
