ROMANS 2:1-3

Sunday Morning:  January 30, 2005

Text:  Romans 2:1-5  "Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things. 2. But we are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth against them which commit such things. 3. And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God? 4. Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance? 5. But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous [just] judgment of God;"

THE LORD WILL JUDGE HIS PEOPLE

Hebrews 10:30-31  ". . . The Lord shall judge his people. 31. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God."

THE HOUSE OF GOD WILL BE JUDGED

1 Peter 4:17-18  "For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God (Paul’s Gospel)? 18. And if the righteous [just] scarcely be saved [be preserved], where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?"

CONDEMNING SELF

Romans 2:1  "Therefore [conjunction connecting chapter 1] thou art inexcusable, O man [vocative, case of address], whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things."

IMPLACABLE, UNMERCIFUL

Romans 1:31  "Without understanding, covenant breakers, without natural affection, implacable [intolerant, not easily calmed] , unmerciful (in judgment):"

JUDGMENT WITH MERCY

James 2:13  “For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath showed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.”

THEY KNOW THE JUDGMENT

Romans 1:32  "Who knowing [epignwskw knowledge] the judgment of God, that they which commit [practice, present active] such things are worthy of death [qanatov, loss of life in the kingdom], not only do [doing, present active] the same, but have pleasure [present active] in them that do [practice, present active] them."

NOT MERCIFUL

Matthew 5:7  "Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy."

JUDGE NOT WITH A BEAM

Matthew 7:1-5  "Judge not (if you have a beam), that ye be not judged. 2. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure (sentence) ye mete, it shall be measured to you again (twice). 3. And why beholdest thou the mote (small problem) that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam (very large problem) that is in thine own eye? 4. Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye? 5. Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly (how to judge) to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye."

JUDGMENT OF GOD

Romans 2:2  "But we are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth against them which commit such things."

SUCH THINGS

Romans 1:29-31  "Being filled with all unrighteousness [unjust], fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, 30. Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31. Without understanding, covenant breakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:"

EVERY WORK WILL BE JUDGED

Ecclesiastes 12:14  "For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil."

STANDARD OF JUDGMENT

Romans 2:16  "In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel."

THE UNJUST

1 Corinthians 6:9-10  "Know ye not that the unrighteous [unjust] shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, 10. Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God."

SONS OF DISOBEDIENCE

Ephesians 5:3-6  "But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints; 4. Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks. 5. For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. 6. Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God (in judgment) upon the children [sons] of disobedience."

THERE WILL BE NO ESCAPE

Romans 2:3  "And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God?"

BE SURE

Numbers 32:23  ". . . behold, ye have sinned against the LORD: and be sure your sin will find you out."

NO RESPECT OF PERSONS

1 Peter 1:17  "And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man's work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear:"

WHATEVER YOU DO

Colossians 3:23-25  "And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; 24. Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. 25. But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons."

EVERY WORK IS REWARDED

1 Corinthians 3:12-15  "Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; 13. Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by [in or with] fire; and the fire shall try [prove] every man's work of what sort it is. 14. If any man's work [of value, gold, silver, precious stones] abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. 15. If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire."

THE LORD IS MERCIFUL

Psalms 103:8-14  "The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy. 9. He will not always chide: neither will he keep his anger for ever. 10. He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. 11. For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him. 12. As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us. 13. Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him. 14. For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust."
