BLIND? PRAY FOR MERCY
Sunday Morning:
December 3, 2000
Text:
Matthew 20:30-34 "And,
behold, two blind men sitting by the way side, when they heard (ears
to hear) that Jesus passed by, cried out, saying, Have mercy on us,
O Lord, thou son of David. 31. And the multitude rebuked them,
because they should hold their peace: but they cried the more, saying, Have
mercy on us, O Lord, thou son of David. 32. And Jesus stood
still, and called them (many called, few chosen), and said, What
will ye that I shall do unto you? 33. They say unto him, Lord, that our
eyes may be opened. 34. So Jesus had compassion
on them, and touched their eyes: and immediately their eyes
received sight, and they followed him."
John 9:39-41
“And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which
see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind."
Psalms 119:18
"Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things
out of thy law."
Matthew 13:16
"But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your
ears, for they hear."
Luke 8:8-10
". . . he cried, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
9. And his disciples asked him, saying, What might this parable be? 10.
And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom
of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they might not
see, and hearing they might not understand."
Romans 9:11-16
"(For the children being not yet born, neither having done any
good or evil, that the purpose of God according to
election might stand, not of works, but of him that
calleth;) 12. It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the
younger. 13. As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I
hated. 14. What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with
God? God forbid. 15. For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on
whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I
will have compassion. 16. So then it is not of
him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that showeth
mercy."
Matthew 22:14
"For many are called, but few are chosen."
Ephesians 1:16-18
". . . making mention of you in my prayers; 17. That the
God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the
spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:
18.
The eyes of
your understanding [heart] being enlightened; that ye may
know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches
of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,"
Isaiah 7:14-15 "Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a
virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
15. Butter and honey shall he eat, that he may know to
refuse the evil, and choose the good."
1 Samuel 14:27 "But
Jonathan . . . put forth the end of the rod that was in his hand, and
dipped it in an honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth; and his
eyes were enlightened."
John 9:1
"And as Jesus passed by, he saw
a man which was blind from his birth."
John 9:32
"Since the world began was it not heard that any
man opened the eyes of one that was born blind."
John 9:35-38
“Jesus heard that they had cast him
out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe
[present active] on the Son of God? 36. He answered and said,
Who is he, Lord, that I might believe [aorist active] on him?
37. And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he
that talketh with thee. 38. And he said, Lord, I believe
[present active]. And he worshipped him.”
John 9:39-38
“And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which
see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind.
40. And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard
these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also? 41. Jesus said unto
them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say,
We see; therefore your sin remaineth."
John 15:22-24
"If I had not come and spoken unto them (Pharisees),
they had not had sin: but now they (Pharisees) have no cloak
for their sin. 23. He that hateth me hateth my Father also. 24.
If I had not done among them (Pharisees) the works which none
other man did, (open the eyes of the blind from birth) they had
not had sin: but now have they both seen (John 9:41) and
hated both me and my Father."
Matthew 15:8-9
“This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me
with their lips; but their heart is far from me. 9. But in vain
they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.”
Matthew 15:12-14
"Then came his disciples, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the
Pharisees were offended, after they heard this saying? 13.
But he answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not
planted, shall be rooted up. 14. Let them alone: they be blind
leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind,
both shall fall into the ditch."
Matthew 23:13
"But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye
shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in
yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in."
Revelation 3:17-18
"Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of
nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable,
and poor, and blind, and naked: 18. I counsel thee
to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich;
and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the
shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eye salve,
that thou mayest see.”
2 Peter 1:5-11
"And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith
virtue; and to virtue knowledge; 6. And to knowledge temperance; and to
temperance patience; and to patience godliness; 7. And to godliness
brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. 8. For if
these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall
neither be barren nor unfruitful in the
knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9. But he that lacketh these
things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten
that he was purged from his old sins. 10. Wherefore the rather,
brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if
ye do these things, ye shall never fall: 11. For so an entrance shall
be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting [agelasting]
kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ."
