Text: Read Matthew 25:22-26
TWO - GOOD SERVANTS
Matthew 25:23 His lord said [affirmed] unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
ONE WICKED SERVANTS
Matthew 25:26 His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked [bad, evil, malicious] and slothful servant, thou knewest [perceive, known, understood] that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed:
KNEW, BUT DID NOT DO
Luke 12:47 And that servant, which knew his lord's will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.
AND UNPROFITABLE
Matthew 25:30 And cast ye the unprofitable (only here and Luke 17:10) servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
SLOTHFUL SERVANT
Luke 17:10 So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do.
A FAITHFUL SERVANT KNOWS …
Romans 2:6-7 Who will render to every man according to his deeds: 7 To them who by patient continuance in well [good] doing [working] seek [present active (not an event)] for glory and honour and immortality [incorruption], (rendered) eternal [(kingdom) age] life:
HE WAS CREATED UNTO GOOD WORKS
Ephesians 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
FRUITFUL IN GOOD WORKS
Colossians 1:10 That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge [epignwsiv] of God;
PREPARES HIMSELF TO SERVE
2 Timothy 2:21 If a man therefore purge himself from these (sins of the flesh), he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work.
TEACHABLE
2 Timothy 3:16-17 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness : 17 That the man of God may be perfect [fresh], throughly furnished [equipped] unto all good works.
SUBMISSIVE TO THE LORD’S WORK
Hebrews 13:20-21 Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, 21 Make you perfect [framed, joined together, mended] in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is well pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
THINKING LIKE THE LORD
Philippians 2:5, 7 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: … 7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, ...
JESUS CAME TO MINISTER TO OTHERS
Matthew 20:27-28 And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant: 28 Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life [soul] a ransom [loosen] for many. (See John 6.66-68 on many 4183)
THE LORD’S EXAMPLE
John 10:11 I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth [present active indicative, not an event] his life [soul] for the sheep.
NOT ON THE CROSS
John 19:30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up [aorist active indicative (an event)] the ghost [spirit].
HIS MINISTRY TO US
Hebrews 4:15-16 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find [get] grace to help in time of need.
SERVANT ATTITUDE - APPLICATION
Matthew 16:24-27 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will [present active, desire (from the soul) (not an event)] come after me, let him deny [aorist active, (repeated event, daily)] himself, and take up [aorist active, (repeated event, daily)] his cross, and follow [present active, (not an event, practice)] me. 25 For whosoever will save his life [soul] shall lose [perish] it (soul): and whosoever will lose [perish (put to death)] his life [soul (will, desire)] for my sake shall find it. 26 For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose [perish] his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? 27 For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.
LIFESTYLE OF A SERVANT
John 15:13-14 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down [aorist active subjunctive] his life [soul] for his friends. 14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.
BRETHREN ARE OUR FRIENDS
1 John 3:15-16 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath [esteems regardeth] eternal life abiding [present active, continuing] in him. 16 Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down [aorist active] his life [soul] for us (brethren): and we ought [present active, owe it, must] to lay down [present active (not an event)] our lives [souls, blood] for the brethren.
BROTHER DEFINED
Matthew 12:50 For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.
A BROTHER’S DESIRE
Matthew 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven [eternal life]; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
BROTHER TO BROTHER
Matthew 25:37-40 Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? 38 When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? 39 Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? 40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
DO NOT LIVE IN SIN
James 4:17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do [present active, perform] good, and doeth [present active, performs] it not, to him it is sin.
