Text: Romans 5:20-6:2 Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: 21 That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord. 6:1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? 2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
SHALL WE CONTINUE IN THE SIN?
Romans 6:1-2 What shall we say then? Shall we continue [present active subjunctive] in [the] sin, that grace may abound? 2 God forbid. . .THE SIN DEFINED
1 John 3:4 Whosoever committeth [the] sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.
THE SIN IS LAWLESSNESS
1 John 3:4 Every one the doing [practices] the sin, also the lawlessness does [practices]; and the sin is the lawlessness.
THE SIN OF LAWLESSNESS
Hebrews 10:26 For if we (practice) sin [present active] wilfully after that we have received the knowledge [epignwsiv, deeper knowledge] of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,
WHAT SHALL WE SAY THEN?
Romans 6:1 What shall we say then [conjunction connecting to Rom 5:20-21]? Shall we continue [present active subjunctive] in [the] sin, that grace may abound?
GRACE ABOUNDED MORE
Romans 5:20 Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where [the] sin abounded, [the] grace did much more abound [uperperisseuw, enough and to spare, exceed, excel]:
NO GRACE WITHOUT FAITH
Romans 5:2 By whom (Jesus Christ, our high priest) also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
FAITH BY THE WORD OF GOD
Romans 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
THROUGH KNOWLEDGE, GRACE
2 Peter 1:2 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge [epignwsiv, deeper knowledge] of God, and of Jesus our Lord,
MAY GRACE REIGN
Romans 5:21 That as [the] sin hath reigned unto death, even so might [subjunctive (it may not)] grace reign through righteousness unto [leading to] eternal [kingdom age] life by Jesus Christ our Lord.
WE MAY NOT LOOK FOR GRACE
Hebrews 4:16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
GRACE, HIS POWER
2 Corinthians 12:9 he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: . . . therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
WE MAY NOT YIELD
Romans 6:13 . . . yield [present active] yourselves unto God, . . . and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.
WE MAY NOT OBEY HIM
Romans 6:16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield [present active] yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; . . . of obedience unto [leading to] righteousness?
WE MAY NOT SERVE RIGHTOUSNESS
Romans 6:19 . . . so now yield your members servants to righteousness (righteous living) unto [leading to] holiness [or sanctification].
WE MAY NOT HAVE FRUIT
Romans 6:22 But now being made free from [the] sin, and become servants to God, ye have [present active] your fruit unto [leading to] holiness, and the end (reaping) everlasting [agelasting] life.
HOW CAN WE LIVE IN THE SIN?
Romans 6:1-2 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? 2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead [aorist, have died] to [the] sin, live any longer therein?
DEATH IS RECKON
Romans 6:11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto [the] sin, but alive [present active participle, living] unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
YIELD YOUR MEMBERS
Romans 6:13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.
MEMBERS
1 Corinthians 12:14-16 For the body is not one member, but many. 15 If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? 16 And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?
MORTIFY YOUR MEMBERS
Colossians 3:5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:
SEEK HEAVENLY THINGS
Colossians 3:1 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek [present active imperative] those things which are above, (in heaven) where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.
MIND HEAVENLY THINGS
Colossians 3:2 Set your affection [present active imperative, mind, thoughts] on things above, (heavenly) not on things on the earth.
RECKONED DEAD
Colossians 3:3 For ye are dead [aorist active, have died], and your life is hid with Christ in God.
WITH HIM IN HEAVENLY GLORY
Colossians 3:4 When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.
THEREFORE, MORTIFY YOU MEMBERS
Colossians 3:5 Mortify [aorist active imperative, put to death] therefore your members (hands, eyes, feet, ears, heart, nose) which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate [passionate] affection, evil concupiscence [lust], and covetousness, which is idolatry:
THE WRATH OF GOD WILL COME
Colossians 3:6 For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh [present middle] on the children [sons] of disobedience:
MATURE IN DISOBEDIENCE
Ephesians 5:5-6 For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. 6 Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children [sons] of disobedience.
THE WAY IT WAS IN THE PAST
Colossians 3:7 In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them.
PUT OFF SIN
Colossians 3:8 But now ye also put off [aorist middle imperative] all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.
PUT OFF THE OLD MAN
Colossians 3:9 Lie [present middle imperative] not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;
PUT ON THE NEW
Colossians 3:10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed [present passive participle, one being renewed] in knowledge [epignwsiv, deeper knowledge] after the image of him that created him:
THE QUESTION
Romans 6:1-2 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in [the] sin, that grace may abound? 2 God forbid.
GRACE REIGNS THROUGH RIGHTEOUSNESS
Romans 5:21 . . . might grace reign through righteousness unto [leading to] eternal [agelasting] life by Jesus Christ our Lord.
