Text:  Romans 15:4  For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience [endurance] and comfort [exhortation] of the scriptures might have [or regard, esteem] hope.

ABRAHAM’S SEED

Hebrews 11:12  Therefore sprang (seed) there even of one (Abraham), and him as good as dead, so many as the stars (heavenly) of the sky in multitude, and as the sand (earthly) which is by the sea shore innumerable.

HIS FIRST SON, ISHMAEL

Genesis 16:15  And Hagar bare Abram a son: and Abram called his son's name, which Hagar bare, Ishmael.

HIS SECOND SON, ISAAC

Genesis 21:3  And Abraham called the name of his son that was born unto him, whom Sarah bare to him, Isaac.

ABRAHAM’S SONS

Galatians 4:22-23  For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman.  23  But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise.

TWO SONS, TWO SEEDS, TWO COVENANTS

Galatians 4:24  Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants [testaments]; the one from the mount Sinai (Old Testament law), which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar. 

ISHMAEL, TYPE OF THE EARTHLY JERUSALEM

Galatians 4:25  For this Agar is mount Sinai (law) in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is (on earth), and is in bondage with her children. 

ISAAC, TYPE OF THE HEAVENLY JERUSALEM

Galatians 4:26  But Jerusalem which is above (New Testament promise) is free (faith and grace), . . .

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE TYPES

Genesis 21:10  . . . the son of this bondwoman shall not be (joint) heir with my son, even with Isaac.

SIGNIFICANCE OF TYPES

1 Corinthians 10:6  Now these things (that happened to Israel) were our (Paul, called, saints) examples [types], to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they (the fathers, 10:1, not the children) also lusted.

EVENTS HAPPENED UNTO THEM

1 Corinthians 10:11  Now all these things happened unto them (the fathers) for ensamples [types]: and they are written for our (Paul, called, saints) admonition [nouqesia, compound understanding + purpose], upon (us) whom the ends of the world [ages] are come.

TWO GROUPS WERE BAPTIZED UNTO MOSES

Exodus 3:22  But every woman (parent) shall borrow of her neighbour, and of her that sojourneth in her house, jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment: and ye shall put them upon your sons, and upon your daughters (nineteen and under); . . .

REBEKAH HAD JEWELS

Genesis 24:53  And the servant brought forth jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment, and gave them to Rebekah: (type of the bride of Christ, Isaac)

ALL OUR FATHERS

1 Corinthians 10:1  Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;

CALLED TO A BETTER INHERITANCE

Leviticus 20:24  . . .Ye shall inherit their land, and I will give it unto you to possess it, a land that floweth with milk and honey: I am the LORD your God, which have separated you from other people.

TYPE OF AN HEAVENLY INHERITANCE

Exodus 15:17  Thou shalt bring them in, and plant them in the mountain (heavenly) of thine inheritance,. . .

THE CHILDREN WERE THE CHOSEN SEED

Deuteronomy 10:15  Only the LORD had a delight in thy fathers to love them, and he chose their seed (sons and daughters) after them, even you above all people…

NOW MADE STARS OF HEAVEN

Deuteronomy 10:22  Thy fathers went down into Egypt with threescore and ten persons; and now the LORD thy God hath made thee (the sons and daughters) as the stars of heaven for multitude.

ALL COVETED A HEAVENLY CITY

Hebrews 11:16  But now they (those in Hebrews 11) desire [covet after, present middle voice, for themselves] a better (than an earthly) country, that is, an heavenly [adjective]: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God:  for he hath prepared for them a city.

THE HEAVENLY CITY, JERUSALEM

Hebrews 12:22  But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem , and to an innumerable company of angels,

TOLD OF AN EARTHLY INHERITANCE

Genesis 13:15-16  For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever.  16  And I will make thy seed (earthly) as the dust of the earth: so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then shall thy seed also be numbered.

FROM THE EARTHLY TO THE HEAVENLY

Genesis 15:5-6  And he brought him forth abroad (the land, earthly), and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be (as stars).  6  And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness. (which is of faith, Romans 4)

TOLD HIS SEED WOULD RULE

Genesis 22:17  That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess [BDB, inherit, to take possession of by force and dwell therein] the gate (the seat of authority) of his [their, plural] enemies (heaven/earth)

HEAVENLY ENEMIES

Ephesians 6:12  For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

AFFIRMING AGAIN HIS SEED

Hebrews 11:12  Therefore sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, so many as the stars of the sky in multitude [bundle, countable], and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable. (uncountable)

MEANING OF MULTITUDE

Act 28:3  And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks (countable), and laid them on the fire, . . .

STARS ARE NUMBERED AND NAMED

Psalms 147:4  He telleth the number (countable) of the stars; he calleth them all by their names (personal).

PAUL LOOKING FOR A HEAVENLY

2 Timothy 4:18  And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me unto [for] his [the] heavenly [adjective modifying “kingdom”] [the] kingdom: (word order ‘the kingdom the heavenly’)

THE FATHER’S DID NOT ENTER

Numbers 14:29-30  Your (the fathers) carcases shall fall (after living 40 years) in this wilderness; and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, which have murmured against me,  30  Doubtless ye shall not come into the land, …

THE LITTLE ONE ARE BROUGHT IN

Numbers 14:31  But your little ones (lxx, paidion, nineteen and under), which ye said should be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land. (better inheritance)

THE LITTLE CHILDREN

Hebrews 2:13-14  And again, I will put my trust in him. And again, Behold I and the children [paidion, little children] which God hath given me.  14  Forasmuch then as the children [paidion] are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through [the] death (Gethsemane) he might destroy [cumber, hamper or hinder] him that had the power of death (to cause us to perish), that is, the devil;

HEAVENLY SEED OF ABRAHAM

Hebrews 2:16  For verily he took … on him the seed of Abraham.
