ROMANS 14:1-4

Sunday Morning:  February 4, 2007

Text:  Romans 14:1-4  Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations.  2  For one believeth that he may eat all things: another, who is weak, eateth herbs.  3  Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth: for God hath received him.  4  Who art thou that judgest another man's servant? to his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand.

HIM THAT IS WEAK

Romans 14:1  Him that is weak [present active participle] in the faith receive ye [present middle], but not to doubtful [dispute, through judgment] disputations [through logic].

HIM

Romans 14:10  But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.

TO STUMBLE AND FALL

Romans 14:13  Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in his brother's way.

DESTROY NOT YOUR BOTHER

Romans 14:15  But if thy brother be grieved with thy meat (food), now walkest thou not charitably. Destroy [present active imperative]  not him with thy meat (food), for whom Christ died.

DO NOT OFFEND

Romans 14:21  It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any thing whereby thy brother stumbleth [present active indicative], or is offended [present passive, scandalize], or is made weak [present active].

WEAK IN FAITH

Matthew 13:21  Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word (of the kingdom), by and by he is offended [present passive, scandalize].

JESUS OFFENDED

Matthew 15:12  Then came his disciples, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended, after they heard this saying?

DOCTRINE WILL OFFEND

John 6:61  When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured at it, he said unto them, Doth this (doctrine) offend you?

THE OFFENDED STOP FOLLOWING

John 6:66  From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.

PREACH THE WORD

2 Timothy 4:2-3  Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.  3  For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;

STRONG DOCTRINE

Hebrews 5:14  But strong meat [solid] belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

HEAR AND BE ROOTED

Romans 10:17  So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

ESTEEM FAITH

1 Timothy 1:19  Holding [ecw, present active, regard, esteem] faith, and a good conscience

 PERFECT LACKING FAITH

1 Thessalonians 3:10  Night and day praying exceedingly that we might see your face, and might perfect that which is lacking in your faith?

ESTABLISHED IN THE FAITH

Colossians 2:7  Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.

IF YE CONTINUE IN THE FAITH

Colossians 1:23  If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard,

FAITH GIVES SUBSTANCE TO THE HOPE

Hebrews 11:1  Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

WE PLEASE HIM BY FAITH

Hebrews 11:6  But without faith it is impossible to please him: …

THE WEAK EAT HERBS

Romans 14:2  For one believeth [present active participle] that he may eat [aorist infinitive] all things: another, who is weak [present active], eateth [present active] herbs.

IN TRANSITION FROM LAW

Acts 15:29  That ye (saved Gentiles) abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well.

DOCTRINES OF DEVILS

1 Timothy 4:1-4  Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;  2  Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;  3  Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats (food), which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.  4  For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving:

MUTUAL RESPECT

Romans 14:3  Let not him that eateth [present active participle] despise [present active imperative] him that eateth [present active imperative] not; and let not him which eateth [present active participle] not judge [present active imperative] him that eateth [present active participle]: for God hath received [aorist middle] him.

EATING FOOD IN THE TEMPLE OF IDOLS

1 Corinthians 8:7-13  Howbeit there is not in every man that knowledge: for some with conscience of the idol unto this hour eat it as a thing offered unto an idol; and their conscience being weak is defiled.  8  But meat (food) commendeth us not to God: for neither, if we eat, are we the better; neither, if we eat not, are we the worse.  9  But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumblingblock to them that are weak.  10  For if any man see thee which hast knowledge sit at meat [to lay down] in the idol's temple, shall not the conscience of him which is weak be emboldened to eat those things which are offered to idols;  11  And through thy knowledge shall the weak brother perish (lose his kingdom life), for whom Christ died?  12  But when ye sin so against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, ye sin against Christ.  13  Wherefore, if meat (food) make my brother to offend [present active indicative], I will eat no flesh (in the temple of the idol) while the world standeth, lest I make my brother to offend.

BOTH THE WEAK AND THE STRONG

Romans 14:4  Who art thou that judgest [present active participle] another man's servant? to his own master he standeth [present active] or falleth [present active]. Yea, he shall be holden [future passive, made to stand] up: for God is able to make him stand [aorist active].

TO FALL IS TO BE CHARGEABLE

Jude 1:24  Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,

CHANGE OR PERISH

2 Peter 3:9  The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any (of us) should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
