ROMANS 13:12-14

Sunday Morning:  January 28, 2007

Text:  Romans 13:12-14  The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light.  13  Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.  14  But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

THE DAY

Romans 13:12  The night is far spent [aorist active, has advanced], the day is at hand [perfect active, draws near]: let us therefore cast off [aorist middle subjunctive] the works of darkness (v.13), and let us put on [aorist middle subjunctive] the armor of light.

THE

John 14:6  Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

THE DAY GOD JUDGES HIS OWN

Matthew 7:22  Many will say to me in that [the] day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?

THE DAY HE IS GLORIFIED

2 Thessalonians 1:10  When he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that [the] day.

FIND MERCY IN THE DAY

2 Timothy 1:16-18  The Lord give mercy unto the house of Onesiphorus; for he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain:  17  But, when he was in Rome, he sought me out very diligently, and found me.  18  The Lord grant unto him that he may find mercy of the Lord in that [the] day: and in how many things he ministered unto me at Ephesus, thou knowest very well.

THE DAY OF REWARDS

2 Timothy 4:8  Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that [the] day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.

GOD DID REST

Hebrews 4:4  For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest [the day (comes here in NT)] the seventh day from all his works.

A THOUSAND YEARS, ONE DAY

2 Peter 3:8  But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

WE ARE IN THE SECOND DAY

Hosea 5:15-6:2  I will go and return to my place, till they acknowledge their offence, and seek my face: in their affliction they will seek me early. 6:1-2  Come, and let us return unto the LORD: for he hath torn, and he will heal us; he hath smitten, and he will bind us up.  2  After two days will he revive us: in the third day (the seventh day) he will raise us up, and we shall live in his sight.

SOME WILL SEE THE COMING KINGDOM

Matthew 16:28  Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom.

ON THE SEVENTH DAY

Matthew 17:1-2  And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart (from the others),  2  And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.

REMAINETH A SEVENTH DAY

Hebrews 4:8-9  For if Jesus (Joshua) had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day.  9  There remaineth [present passive] therefore a rest [sabbath (day)]  to the people of God.

GOD GAVE ISRAEL REST

Joshua 21:44  And the LORD gave them rest round about, according to all that he sware unto their fathers: and there stood not a man of all their enemies before them; the LORD delivered all their enemies into their hand.

GOD DOES NOT NEED A REST

Isaiah 40:28  Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding.

GOD RESTED ON THE SEVENTH DAY

Genesis 2:2  And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.

SATAN’S TEMPORARY LOSS

DEVIL SEEKING WHOM HE MAY DEVOUR

1 Peter 5:8  Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

SEVENTH DAY REST

Revelation 20:3  And cast him (Satan] into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.

THERE IS NO REST TODAY

Ephesians 6:12-13  For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world [age, (day 5 and 6)], against spiritual wickedness in high [heavenlies] places.  13  Wherefore take unto you the whole (every piece) armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

WORKS OF DARKNESS

Romans 13:13  Let us walk [aorist active subjunctive] honestly, as in the day; not [mh] in rioting (excess indulging) and drunkenness (intoxication), not in chambering (lust) and wantonness (lack of restraint), not in strife (contention for superiority) and envying (discontented feelings).

TAKE HEED TO YOURSELVES

Luke 21:34-36  And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting (excessive eating), and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.  35  For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth.  36  Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these (surfeiting, drunkenness, cares) things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man (judge).

PUT ON THE LORD JESUS CHRIST

Romans 13:14  But put ye on [imperative] the Lord Jesus Christ, and make [present middle imperative] not [mh] provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

BE STEDFAST, UNMOVEABLE

1 Corinthians 15:58  Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.
