ROMANS 11:8-11

Sunday Morning:  October 29, 2006

Text:  Romans 11:7-11  What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for; but the election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded  8  (According as it is written, God hath given them the spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear;) unto this day.  9  And David saith, Let their table be made a snare, and a trap, and a stumblingblock, and a recompense unto them:  10  Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see, and bow down their back alway.  11  I say then, Have they stumbled that they should fall? God forbid: but rather through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, for to provoke them to jealousy.

ISRAEL

Romans 11:8  (According as it is written, God hath given them (Israel) the spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear;) unto this day.

THE LORD’S DOINGS

Isaiah 29:10  For the LORD hath poured out upon you the spirit of deep sleep, and hath closed your eyes: the prophets and your rulers, the seers hath he covered.

THE LORD OF HOST SAID

Isaiah 6:9-10  And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not.  10  Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed.

THE LORD’S DOINGS

John 12:38-40  That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed [aorist active indicative] our report [hearing, (that brings faith)]? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed?  39  Therefore they could not believe [present active], because that Esaias said again,  40  He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them. (Isaiah 6:10; 44:18)

DAVID SAID

Romans 11:9-10  And David saith, Let their table be made a snare, and a trap, and a stumblingblock, and a recompense [repay] unto them:  10   Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see, and bow down [bend together (afflict)] their back alway.

WHERE THEY FEED

Psalms 69:22-23  Let their table (feasts) become a snare before them: and that which should have been for their welfare, let it become a trap.  23  Let their eyes be darkened, that they see not; and make their loins continually to shake.

UNWISE ISRAEL

Isaiah 28:7-8  But they also have erred through wine, and through strong drink are out of the way; the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink, they are swallowed up of wine, they are out of the way through strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble in judgment.  8  For all tables are full of vomit and filthiness, so that there is no place clean

BE NOT DRUNK WITH WINE

Ephesians 5:17-18  Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.  18  And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the (Abba) Spirit (of His Son);

BE WEANED FROM MILK

Isaiah 28:9  Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts.

DOCTRINE

Isaiah 28:10  For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:

AS IN PARABLES

Isaiah 28:11  For with stammering [unintelligible] lips and another tongue [speech] will he speak to this people.

WHY PARABLES

Matthew 13:10-11  … Why speakest thou unto them in parables?  11  … Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.

DOCTRINE IN PARABLES

Mark 4:2  And he taught them many things by parables, and said unto them in his doctrine,

MORE DOCTRINE

Isaiah 28:13  But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.

ENDURE SOUND DOCTRINE

2 Timothy 4:3-4  For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;  4  And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables [fiction].

DO NOT TURN FROM THE COMMANDMENT

2 Peter 2:21-22  For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness (doctrine), than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them.  22  But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again (on their table); and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire (on their table).

THE WAY OF RIGHTEOUSNESS

1 John 3:23  And this is his [the] commandment, That we should believe [present active] on the name (mysteries of the kingdom, Rev 19:13) of his Son Jesus Christ, and love (catalyst for faith, Gal 5:6) one another, as he gave us commandment.

THE QUESTION

Romans 11:11  I say then, Have they stumbled that they should fall [fail]? God forbid: but rather through their fall [from para + piptw, to fall away)  salvation (so great salvation, Heb. 2:3) is come unto the Gentiles, for to provoke them to jealousy.

SO GREAT SALVATION

Hebrews 2:3  How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them (Apostles, Disciples) that heard him;

AT THE FIRST

Matthew 10:5-7  These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not:  6  But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.  7  And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand.

ISRAEL FELL AWAY

Hebrews 6:4-6  For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened (way of righteousness), and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers (teaching ministry) of the Holy Ghost,  5  And have tasted the good word [rhma specific word] of God, and the powers of the world [age] to come,  6  If they shall fall away [para + piptw], to renew them again unto repentance; …

YE SHALL NEVER FALL

2 Peter 1:10-11  Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things (bear the fruits of the Abba spirit), ye shall never fall [fail]:

FRUIT OF THE ABBA SPIRIT

2 Peter 1:5-8  … giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;  6  And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;  7  And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.  8  For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

THE FRUIT

Galatians 5:22-23  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,  23  Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

ENTER INTO THE KINGDOM

2 Peter 1:11  For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
