BY THE SPIRIT WE WAIT

Sunday Morning:  October 5, 2003

Text: Galatians 5:1-5  "Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. 2. Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing. 3. For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole law. 4. Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace. 5. For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith."

WAITING FOR THE RIGHTEOUSNESS

Galatians 5:5  "For we through the Spirit wait [present middle] for the hope of righteousness by [ek, out from] faith."

UPON ALL THAT BELIEVETH

Romans 3:22  "Even the righteousness of God which is by [dia, through or by means of] faith of [or from] Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that (that continue to) believe [present active participle]:"

THOSE WHO CONTINUE TO BELIEVE

Romans 4:11  ". . . circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he (Abraham) had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe [present active participle], . . . that righteousness (of the faith) might be imputed unto them (who continue to believe in the present tense) also:"

CONTINUE TO WALK (LIVE) BY FAITH

Romans 4:12 "Them who are not of the circumcision only, but who also [the] (ones who continue to) walk [the ones walking, present active participle] in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham."

BELIEVE FOR A WHILE

Luke 8:13  ". . .when they hear, receive the word (of the kingdom) with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe [present active], and in time of temptation (tribulation) fall away [present active] (a process)."

HOPE

Galatians 5:5  "For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith."

HOPE FRUSTRATED

Acts 24:26  "He (Felix) hoped also that money should have been given him of Paul, that he might loose him: wherefore he sent for him the oftener, and communed with him." (That did not happen, hope frustrated)

DEPARTING FROM THE HOPE

1 Timothy 4:1  "Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart (not continue) from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;"

 WE WAIT FOR APPROVAL

Galatians 5:5  "For we through the Spirit wait [present middle] for the hope of righteousness by faith."

WAITING FOR THE PROMOTION

Romans 8:23  ". . . we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting [present middle participle] for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body."

HAVE HOPE, THEN WAIT

Romans 8:25  "But if we hope for that (the placing of sons) we see not, then do we with patience [endurance] wait [present middle] for it."

WAITING BY MEANS OF FAITH

Galatians 5:5  "For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith."

HOPE BY FAITH

Hebrews 11:1  "Now faith is the substance (support) of things hoped [present active participle, adjective modifying “things”] for (things that are real), the evidence [confidence] of things (real) not seen (are real)."

FAITH PLEASES GOD

Hebrews 11:6  "But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh (evidence of faith) to God must believe that he is (substance), and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek (evidence of faith) him."

RIGHTEOUSNESS

Galatians 5:5  "For we through the Spirit wait (waiting [present middle] for the righteousness not hope) for the hope of righteousness by faith."

RIGHTEOUSNESS NOW

1 John 1:9  "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."

SEEK HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS

Matthew 6:33  "But (continue to) seek [present active] ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; . . ."

OUT OF FAITH

Galatians 5:5  "For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by [out of] faith."

MIGHT BE JUSTIFIED BY FAITH

Galatians 2:16  "Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed [aorist (salvation)] in Jesus Christ, that (having been saved) we might be justified (to stand approved) by the faith of Christ . . ."

IF YOU CONTINUE IN THE FAITH

Colossians 1:22-23  "In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight: 23. If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, . . ." (do not fall away)

BY CONTINUING FAITH

Romans 1:17  "For therein [gospel of Christ] is the righteousness of God revealed from [ek, out from] faith to [eis, leading to] faith (continued): as it is written, The just shall live by faith."

CONTINUE IN THE FAITH

Acts 14:22  "Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God."

FAITH CAN FAIL

Luke 22:32 "I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not"

THROUGH THE SPIRIT

Galatians 5:5  "For we through the Spirit [one word, dative case, in/with spirit] wait for the hope of righteousness by faith."

The word Holy occurs zero times in Galatians.

The word Spirit occurs 18 times in Galatians.

The words “Holy Spirit” and the word “Son” do not occur together in a single verse in the New Testament.

NOT THE HOLY SPIRIT

Galatians 4:6  ". . . God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father."

SUBMISSIVE SPIRIT

Mark 14:36  "And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible (confidence) unto thee; take away this cup (I do not like) from me: nevertheless not what I will (I will drink this cup), but what thou wilt (the will of the Father)."

THIS SPIRIT IS TAUGHT

Galatians 3:2-3  "This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing [thing heard, noun, genitive, singular] of faith? 3. Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?"

THIS SPIRIT IS MINISTERED

Galatians 3:5  "He therefore that ministereth [present active (through teaching)] to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, doeth he it by the works of the law, or by [ek, out of] the hearing [thing heard (by preaching/teaching), noun, genitive, singular] of faith?"

MINISTERED BY TEACHING

Romans 10:17 "So faith comes [out] from hearing   [thing heard (by preaching/teaching), noun, genitive, singular], and [the] hearing [thing heard (by preaching/teaching), noun, genitive, singular] by the word [spoken word] of Christ [God]."

THE MYSTERIES OF THE KINGDOM

Luke 8:10-11  "And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing (the incorruptible seed) they might not understand. 11. Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God."
