BAPTISM AND THE KINGDOM

Sunday Morning:  July 9, 2000

Text: Matthew 3:13-15  "Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.

14. But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?

15. And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfill [accomplish, complete] all righteousness. .”

COMPLETE RIGHTEOUSNESS

Philippians 3:9  "And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:"

THE BAPTIZED SHOULD LIVE BY FAITH

Hebrews 10:38  "Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him."

ACCOMPLISHING RIGHTEOUSNESS

Galatians 2:20  "I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me."

ONLY TO ISRAEL

.Acts 13:24  "When John had first preached before his coming the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel."

JOHN PREACHED

SELFLESSNESS

JESUS WAS BAPTIZED

JESUS HAD THIS TESTIMONY

Matthew 3:17  "And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."

HE WAS MATURE AT TWELVE

Luke 2:42  "And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast."

BE ON HIS OWN

Luke 2:43  "And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child [pais, mature man] Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it."

JESUS WAS MATURE

Luke 2:48  "And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son [teknon, mature man], why hast thou thus dealt with us?. . . ."

READY FOR MINISTRY

Luke 2:49  "And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?"

JESUS DIED TO SELF

Luke 2:51  "And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart."

THE DEATH BEAR FRUIT

John 12:24-26  "Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit. 25. He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal. 26. If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour."

BEAR MUCH FRUIT

John 15:8  "Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples."

JESUS PREACHED

Matthew 4:17  "From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."

BAPTISM OF REPENTANCE

Mark 1:4  "John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission (deliverance from the power of sin) of sins."

FULFILL ALL RIGHTEOUSNESS

Matthew 3:13, 15  "Then cometh Jesus . . . to be baptized of him. . . .15. for thus it becometh us to fulfill all righteousness..”

MORE THAN BEING JUST

Matthew 5:20  "For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven."

PAUL WAS JUST

Philippians 3:5-6  "Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee;

6. Concerning zeal, persecuting the church; touching the righteousness which is in the law, blameless."

MORE THAN BEING JUST

LIVE BY FAITH

BURIED WITH HIM BY BAPTISM

Romans 6:1-4  "What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?

2. God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?

3. Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?

4. Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life."

PAUL LIVED BY FAITH

ONE ON THE LEFT AND ONE ON THE RIGHT

37. They said unto him, Grant unto us that we may sit, one on thy right hand, and the other on thy left hand, in thy glory. (In the kingdom of the heavens)

REPEATED BAPTISMS

38. But Jesus said unto them, Ye know not what ye ask: can ye drink of the cup that I drink of? and be baptized [present passive indicative] with the baptism that I am baptized with?

BELIEVE AND SUFFER

Philippians 1:29  "For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe [present active] on him, but also to suffer [present active] for his sake;"

ARM YOURSELVES

1 Peter 4:1-2  "Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased [to leave, refrain; as one who repents] from sin;

2. That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts (not dead to self) of men, but to the will of God."

THE DEAD, WHO ENDURE, REIGN

2 Timothy 2:11-13  "It is a faithful saying: For if we be dead with him, we shall also live with him:

12. If we suffer [upomenw, endure], we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us:

13. If we believe  not [apistew, present active], yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself."
