Text: Philippians 1:1-2 Paul and Timotheus, the servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons: 2 Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
MACEDONIA VISION AND CALL
Acts 16:9-10 And a vision appeared to Paul in the night; There stood a man of Macedonia, and prayed him, saying, Come over into Macedonia, and help us. 10 And after he had seen the vision, immediately we endeavoured to go into Macedonia, assuredly gathering that the Lord had called us for to preach the gospel unto them.
STRAIGHT TO THE CHIEF CITY
Acts 16:12 And from thence to Philippi, which is the chief city of that part of Macedonia, and a colony: and we were in that city abiding certain days.
WITH SAVED JEWS ON THE SABBATH
Acts 16:13 And on the sabbath we went out of the city by a river side, where prayer was wont to be made; and we sat down, and spake unto the women which resorted thither. (ten men required to establish a synagogue)
AS PAUL’S MANNER WAS
Acts 17:1-2 … they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews: 2 And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, …
NO PROSELYTES IN PHILIPPI
Acts 13:43 Now when the congregation (in Antioch of Pisidia) was broken up, many of the Jews and religious proselytes (Gentiles v.42) followed Paul and Barnabas: who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God.
NO MESSAGE OF SALVATION
Acts 16:14-15 And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira (Rev. 1:11; 2:18), which worshipped [present middle] God, heard [perfect active, kept on hearing] us: whose heart the Lord opened [thoroughly opened], that she attended [present active, have regard] unto the things which were spoken of Paul.
THE WORD OF GOD BELIEVED
Acts 16:15 And when she was baptized, and her household, …
REQUIREMENT FOR BAPTISM
Acts 8:36-37 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? 37 And Philip said, If thou believest [present active] with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe [present active] that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
FIRST SALVATION NEEDED
Acts 16:30-31 And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be
saved? 31 And they said, Believe [aorist active imperative] on
the Lord Jesus
Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and
thy house. (Not an issue with Lydia who was already saved and
WORD OF GOD PRESENTED
Acts 16:32-33 And they spake unto him the word of the Lord [God, 24th edition Nestles], and to all that were in his house. 33 And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes (he repented); and was baptized, he and all his, straightway.
THE SEED SOWN DEFINED
Luke 8:10-11 And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand. 11 Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.
REPENT FIRST THEN BAPTISM
Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift (of agelasting life) of the Holy Ghost.
Acts 16:34 And when he had brought them into his house, he set meat before them, and rejoiced, believing in God with all his house.
Acts 16:15 And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there. And she constrained us.
BRETHREN GATHERED IN LYDIA’S HOUSE
Acts 16:40 And they (not we, Luke writing) went out of the prison, and entered into the house of Lydia: and when they (Paul and Silas, Timothy v.3, Luke) had seen [knew, had knowledge], the brethren, they comforted [aorist active, parakalew, exhorted] them, and departed.
PHILIPPIANS ADDRESSES THE BRETHREN
Philippians 1:12 But I would ye should understand, brethren,
HEAR THIS AGAIN BRETHREN
Philippians 3:1 Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things to you, to me indeed is not grievous, but for you it is safe.
BRETHREN, MOVE ON
Philippians 3:13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,
BRETHREN, FOLLOW ME
Philippians 3:17 Brethren, be followers together (mutual examples) of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample.
BRETHREN WERE LOVED
Philippians 4:1 Therefore, my brethren dearly beloved and longed for, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, my dearly beloved.
WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED AND RECEIVED, DO
Philippians 4:8-9 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. 9 Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.
PAUL AND TIMOTHY
Philippians 1:1 Paul and Timotheus, the servants [slaves] of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons:
PAUL, A BENJAMITE
Philippians 3:5-6 Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee; 6 Concerning zeal, persecuting the church; touching the righteousness which is in the law, blameless.
PAUL, AN APOSTLE
Colossians 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timotheus our brother,
Acts 16:1-3 Then came he to Derbe and Lystra: and, behold, a certain disciple was there, named Timotheus, the son of a certain woman, which was a Jewess, and believed; but his father was a Greek: 2 Which was well reported of by the brethren that were at Lystra and Iconium. 3 Him would Paul have to go forth with him; and took and circumcised him because of the Jews which were in those quarters: for they knew all that his father was a Greek.
A MAN OF FAITH
2 Timothy 1:5 When I call to remembrance the unfeigned [real, sincere] faith (hope) that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.
